Attention, Artists: Grants And Workspace Opportunities At LMCC

The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council is offering funding and workspace opportunities to individual creators, artist collectives and creatively-engaged nonprofits. 

With the goal of serving, connecting and making space for artists and community, the Council “envisions New York City as a place in which artists and community in dialogue are creating a more just, equitable, and sustainable society,” according to their website.

The Manhattan Arts Grants initiative is open to Manhattan-based artists and groups, with different levels of funding (up to $10,000) for individuals and organizations based on project type, teaching, community engagement and location. These grants are often among the first awards received by an artist or group, and they can help provide leverage for other support and funding. Past grantees have devised interactive concerts and public window workshops, collaborative murals, among other projects.

The Governors Island Residency program is open to artists, writers and cultural workers across the five boroughs. From September through December 2020, awardees will receive access to free, temporary daytime workspaces at Governors Island, provided by various organizations. 

Conceived as a response to COVID-19, the residency aims to support artists most in need of space during this public-health crisis, especially those, according to the application page, “whose practices give back to, or aim to make positive change, within the NYC cultural community.” Learn more and apply here.
