Klimt to the Limit: New Immersive Art Exhibit Opens in September

Remember last year when the city was first abuzz over the immersive Vincent Van Gogh exhibit that invited visitors to wander through a trippy landscape of the painter’s works? That experience let many of even Van Gogh fans see the artist’s work in a new light — as they got to submerge themselves in some of the famed painter’s work. Now fans of Gustav Klimt’s lavishly painted, risque works should get excited because they’ll get the same experience at Gustav Klimt, Gold in Motion, set to debut on September 14. Tickets for pre-sale are now available.

Gold in Motion will be housed in the new Hall des Lumieres, an immersive art center meant to show off the intersection of art and technology, with exhibits rotating every year or so. The Beaux-Arts building was once the Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank; now Culturespaces, the firm behind the project, is renovating a 28,000-square-foot space to highlight its marble, classic brass and stained glass features.

Expect the Klimt and other exhibits to play off the architecture of the building, using cutting-edge mapping technology and an elegant soundtrack show you art you’ve seen before in whole new ways. Klimt, whose most famous painting is The Kiss, uses bright, swirling colors and human forms that scandalized the art world during his lifetime. Those will make for a pretty exciting immersive display for visitors in 2022.
