China Institute Stirs Up a Cultural Melting Pot With the Beijing Haggadah

On April 7, two cultures will intersect at the China Institute (40 Rector St.) when artist Leon Fenster presents “The Beijing Haggadah,” Passover text that portrays life in China’s capital while telling the story of the Jewish exodus.

Join Leon Fenster for a deep dive into his acclaimed “Beijing Haggadah,” the first of a series of vibrantly illuminated Haggadahs that will be based on specific cities and communities. The Haggadah is a traditional book used by Jews each year at the festival of passover. This time, Leon has used illustration, typography and commentary to situate it in historical Beijing, a historically radical act! 

James Heimowitz, president of the China Institute, will join Fenster for a conversation that begins at 4 p.m. Tickets are free.
