On August 7, 1998, truck bombs exploded at U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, killing 224 people and injuring more than 4,000. The FBI’s investigations of the attacks, codenamed KENBOM and TANBOM, were at that time the largest deployment in Bureau history. To mark the 25th anniversary of the bombings, retired FBI Special Agent in Charge Mary E. Galligan who responded on the ground to the Tanzania bombing, is joined by retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent John Liguori who was a supervisor of the FBI squad that oversaw the trial. Together, in conversation with Museum Director, Clifford Chanin, they reflect on both investigations and discuss how the attacks impacted counterterrorism efforts in the years leading up to 9/11.
