Top experts will share their insights and examine the possibilities and challenges associated with China’s Green Belt and Road Initiative. Since its inception in 2013, the China-led Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has been striving to promote economic development and inter-regional connectivity across the globe, and over 140 member countries have joined the Initiative. To reduce the negative environmental impact of the investment in BRI countries, China launched the Green Belt and Road initiative to increase BRI’s environmental sustainability and align its projects with its 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals. What kind of projects are involved in the Green Belt and Road Initiative (GBRI)? What metrics are being used to make sure that these projects are environmentally sustainable? Is this a genuine effort to build a sustainable future, or an effort to “green-wash” one of China’s largest foreign policy endeavors? Given the current geopolitical and COVID-19 situation, what are GBRI’s most pressing challenges and most important opportunities?
