Where New Yorkers Can Go to Duck the Vicious Heat
The city is in the midst of a brutal heatwave, and while vicious temperatures aren’t particularly pleasant, New York City always has the typical heat-relief spots (movie theaters, indoor restaurants) to help locals cool down when the mercury spikes. For those unable to hit up Barbenheimer for an afternoon or a round of margaritas at Mezcali, the city is still providing multiple cooling centers across the five boroughs.
The New York Times compiled a partial list of locations, but the NYC Emergency Management Department has a handy cooling center finder to facilitate quick A/C breaks.
The map-finder tool will point you to one of the more than 200 cooling centers open throughout the city, so you can stop by a center near you or pick any spot that’s convenient. Hours vary and are subject to change daily, so be sure to check the finder for updates.
