McNally Jackson Book Talk Looks at Modern Plight of Black Women
The odds are stacked against Black women in America. From salary disparities to pregnancy complications, they contend with countless scrapes and aggravations in public life that often go unnoticed to racial and cultural majorities. “It is related to this stress that is completely out of our control,” reporter Brianna Holt noted in a recent interview, “just from living in the society that we live in as Black people, as Black women.”
But Holt strives “to try and look at your situation and see what stressors you can take out, if any” in her new book, “In Our Shoes: On Being a Young Black Woman in Not-So ‘Post-Racial’ America.” On Wednesday, April 12, the Insider reporter will discuss her debut title with BuzzFeed alum Essence Gant at McNally Jackson Books (4 Fulton St.). The memoir, which Kirkus Reviews called “a commendable, colloquial perspective on a continually fraught topic,” examines the myriad ways in which Black women deal with stereotypes and discriminations that are suffused in the culture. The book talk begins at 7 p.m. RSVP here.
