How to Survive a Case of the Munchies in Lower Manhattan

It’s 4/20, and if you’re among the New Yorkers partaking in the newly legal (though not particularly new) holiday, there’s a decent chance you might find yourself getting really hungry. Lest you find yourself staring at the rack of chips inside CVS for 30 minutes — not that we’re speaking from personal experience, of course — we’ve highlighted a handful of downtown spots suitable for the occasion.

Whether you’re in pursuit of Chinese, pizza or sandwiches, here’s where to satisfy your cravings in the neighborhood.

Yip’s

The walkup noodle buffet serves generous portions of classics like spicy garlic chicken, fried chicken wings, wonton soup and teriyaki shrimp. And budget-conscious stoners will be happy to know that it’s possible to leave here with a steaming plate of two entrees — served with rice or lo mein — plus a side order for less than $15 altogether. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (18 Beaver St.)

Pizza Etalia

If Yip’s offerings aren’t quite what you’re in the mood for, head next door to Pizza Etalia. Customers can satisfy their munchies with offerings like the blazing buffalo chicken slice, which brings together buffalo chicken, buffalo sauce, ranch and fresh mozzarella. Or keep it classic with a margherita pizza, pepperoni or even a few slices of plain cheese. Calzones are also on the menu if that’s more your speed, or you can settle in with a lavish serving of pasta. Actually, you don’t even have to choose between pizza and pasta with the penne alla vodka pizza. Pair it with a salad, because who are we to tell you how to satisfy your cannabis-induced appetite? You could even ignore the pizza snobs and order a Hawaiian pizza. You only celebrate 4/20 once a year, after all. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. (20 Beaver St.).

787 Coffee

In the case of a wake-and-bake situation, one could dart over to 787 Coffee for a morning-time  empanada filled with beans and peppers or a spanakopita-esque spinach and feta blend. Or consider a quesito de guayaba, a Puerto Rican pastry that brings together puff pastry, cream cheese and sweet guava. Get here early if you can, since they often sell out. But if you miss out, don’t worry: you can still grab a dozen chocolate chunk cookies, made with three kinds of chocolate. Since you’re there, you might as well grab a few of their vegetarian breakfast tacos. Hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. (66 Pearl St.)

One final note: Be sure to pick up your sticky-icky goods at any one of the city’s licensed dispensaries (and not at the illegal shops that peddle cheap, unregulated products that make it harder for the legitimate businesses to compete). Happy 4/20!
