Overview

“Charging Bull” is located at the northern tip of Bowling Green, but this was not the statue's original home. Italian artist Arturo Di Modica first placed the statue at the corner of Wall Street and Broad Street, in front of the New York Stock Exchange after the stock-market crash of 1987. Di Modica installed the statue in the middle of the night, and, the following day, police removed the statue. One week later, the city agreed to permanently relocate Charging Bull to its present location. Joe Lewis, a British collector and former owner of international fine art auction house Christie's, purchased the original statue from Di Modica in 2004 under the condition that he leave it at its current location.
