Overview

"The Pylons" is located in Battery Park's North Cove, between the North Cove Marina and the Brookfield Place ferry terminal. Designer Martin Puryear made these two illuminated pieces in 1992 with diverging materials to give them each a distinct style. One is open to the air, crafted of stainless steel that creates a mesh-like texture with light shining upward from each tier; the other is a solid granite pillar of stacked, angular forms. Combined as one installation, "The Pylons" creates a symbolic gateway to Lower Manhattan, visible from both water and land.
