The African Burial Ground Is Hosting Free Black History Events All Month

The plight of Black abolitionists, the struggle to reckon with slavery and the intersection of art and history are all at the forefront of Black History Month celebrations at the African Burial Ground

Every Saturday, the national monument and education center at 290 Broadway is hosting free weekly lectures throughout February. The series will feature a lineup of speakers, historians and craft projects.

It all begins on February 4 with a presentation from Tom Goldscheider on the Black abolitionists of the Underground Railroad. On February 11, catch NYU historian Jennifer L. Morgan in a talk about reckoning with slavery. The series closes on February 25 with the life and times of an enslaved Black woman named Elizabeth (“Liss”) — who ended up involved in the Revolutionary War while fighting for her own freedom.
