New York on Film Screening of Cult Classic “Wolfen” Will Be a Howlin’ Good Time
It’s Halloweentime in New York City, and we’re getting into the spirit with our next New York on Film installment. On October 29, join the Downtown Alliance at Alamo Drafthouse Downtown (28 Liberty) for a special screening of the 1981 cult classic “Wolfen.” This supernatural thriller, directed by Michael Wadleigh (of “Woodstock” fame), offers a unique and cerebral twist on the werewolf genre.
Set in a decaying New York City and featuring many of our notable downtown locations such as the Battery, Wall Street and more, “Wolfen” follows police detective Dewey Wilson (Albert Finney) as he investigates a series of bizarre murders. What starts as a standard crime thriller soon veers into the realm of the supernatural, blending elements of horror, mystery and social commentary. The film features stunning cinematography, including early use of thermographic camera techniques, and a stellar cast including Diane Venora, Gregory Hines and Edward James Olmos.
“Wolfen” stands out for its exploration of Native American mythology, urban decay and environmental themes — all wrapped in a tense, atmospheric package. It’s a film that defies easy categorization, offering thoughtful scares that linger long after the credits roll.
After the screening, stay for a talkback session featuring two film experts:
- Michael Gingold: A renowned horror journalist and author known for his long-standing association with Fangoria magazine and his books on horror film history.
- Gavin Smith: Film critic and former editor of Film Comment.
Our experts will unpack the film’s themes, its unique place in horror cinema and its lasting impact on the genre. They’ll explore how “Wolfen” diverges from typical werewolf narratives, its commentary on urban alienation and its prescient environmental message. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or discovering “Wolfen” for the first time, it’s sure to be a thrilling and thought-provoking evening.
The screening runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; tickets are $5 and include popcorn and a beverage. All proceeds will be donated to the Wildlife Conservation Society. Purchase your ticket here.
